In November 2025, I carefully packed my bags, deciding which clothes were suitable and what resources we might need, and flew to Delhi, India.
It wasn’t my first trip to India, nor my first mission experience, but even the short drive from the airport to our modest hotel was overwhelming. The air pollution was intense, and traffic wove in and out of gridlock with a constant barrage of horns — a vivid introduction to modern-day India.
Although I had previously served on missions in Brazil, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe, this was my first adventure with Heart for Kids (H4K). I’m a firm advocate for Christ-followers getting involved in missions overseas. Over 25 years ago, I came from the UK to Cape Town, South Africa, as a fieldworker — and I’ve never looked back.
I learned about H4K from a friend at church who had been on a previous trip to India. I felt led to serve and made enquiries. As a teacher and former children’s worker, I knew I could contribute to the team running programmes in rural schools across Northern India.
Our team of five gelled well as we prepared:
Being with teammates from churches around the world brings both blessings and challenges, but it was a privilege to serve together.
Back home now in beautiful Cape Town, I still see the faces of many children we met. Even in tough conditions, their smiles radiated joy and pleasure.
At one Child Development Centre, a young boy was confined to a specially built bike-wheelchair. There wasn’t enough space for him to join the other children inside, so he sat at the doorway, excited.
As our programme ended, I made sure he had a goodie bag and hugged him. Moments later, he was off down the road with his friends, happily propelling his chair – a humbling and unforgettable moment.
I was also inspired by the brave women at a tailoring school. They were visibly proud and excited by our visit. As we listened to their stories and shared words of encouragement, I was struck by their resilience. Many had only recently come to know the Lord. They were determined to succeed and provide for their families, graciously welcoming our prayers.
One of the most memorable parts of the trip was visiting a leprosy village. Men, women, and children of all ages sat in long lines.
After sharing a message of encouragement from Joshua 1, we helped volunteers serve a meal. It was a privilege to serve people who had endured tough and often painful lives.
I was initially puzzled to see children and young people there, but I spoke with a young lady who was training to be a nurse and had dreams of succeeding in her career.
H4K is all about relationships. I admire how they work alongside a local pastor with a clear vision for church planting and bringing people to Christ. Their programmes — including children’s schools, women’s tailoring centres, and drilling boreholes for clean water — are strategic and deeply beneficial for the communities they serve.
Teams return to the same villages twice a year, building continuity, trust, love, and strong relationships with local people.
Take the plunge. Step forward in your faith and embark upon a H4K mission trip. You won’t be sorry. You will grow in faith and worship more than you will give. You are an ambassador for Christ wherever you are in the World.
Safe water bores are currently being installed in 1 village per month.
That keeps between 1300 and 2000 children and family members safe.
We would love to do more.
